Why do I need to measure my blood pressure at home?

Monitoring blood pressure at home can help:

  • Help in early diagnosis. Self-monitoring can help your doctor diagnose high blood pressure at an earlier stage than if you only measure it in the doctor's office from time to time. Monitoring blood pressure at home is especially important for people with high blood pressure or other medical conditions that lead to high blood pressure, such as diabetes or kidney disease.
  • Follow up on the feasibility of treatment. Checking your blood pressure regularly is the only way to check whether lifestyle changes or taking medications are yielding positive results or not. Monitoring blood pressure changes at home can help you and your doctor make appropriate decisions about treatment, such as adjusting doses or changing medications.
  • Encouraging better control. Self-monitoring can enhance your sense of control over your health. It may strengthen your motivation to control blood pressure by improving your diet, practicing physical activity, and taking appropriate medications.
  • Reducing health care costs. Self-monitoring can reduce the frequency of your visits to the doctor.
  • Check whether blood pressure measurement in the clinic is different from that outside the clinic. Some people experience sudden increases in blood pressure due to anxiety and stress during a doctor's visit (white coat syndrome). While for others, blood pressure is normal when measured in a doctor's office even though it is high elsewhere (hidden hypertension). Monitoring your blood pressure at home can help determine whether you actually have high blood pressure.

It should be noted that not everyone can monitor blood pressure at home. For example, for people who suffer from an irregular heartbeat, home blood pressure measuring devices may not give them an accurate reading.
